American Giant No-BS Pant Review

American Giant stands out because of their longstanding commitment to US sourcing and manufacturing. In fact, many of their cotton tees and separates are made with US-grown cotton, which is more rare than you would think. But American Giant is more than t-shirts. They just reintroduced their Made in LA ponte pant, the No-BS pant.

They sent me two styles to review: the Kick Flare and the High Rise. I’m wearing both in black.

What is Ponte?

Ponte pants are an increasingly popular option for women’s workwear. But why are they called that?

Ponte actually refers to the fabric, which is a “thick, double-knit fabric” produced on a knitting machine. While in the jersey family, ponte is thicker and more substantial than most jersey fabrics, making it a great option for pants.

The end result is a product that is professional, flattering, and as comfortable as leggings.

American Giant uses a custom-developed ponte fabric (54% pro modal, 40% nylon, 6% spandex) that has been wear-tested for pilling and fading. They describe it as curve-hugging with a matte finish, and I agree.

No-BS Kick Flare Pants at Work

I styled the No-BS Kick Flare pant the way I would for an interview: with a patterned blazer, classic oxfords, and a simple rib knit shirt.

I think the kick flare is particularly flattering on my “pear-shaped” frame. They’re fitted through the thigh, and then contour out just a little bit for visual interest. I like the vents at the leg openings and the cropped length. As far as rise, they go up to just below my natural waist.

My measurements are 30″ waist, 42″ hips, and I went with a size 12. If you’re proportioned like me, the hip measurement is most important when deciding which size to get in these.

No-BS Kick Flare Pants at a Party

For fun, I decided to style these for a theoretical party, too!

I paired the Kick Flares with a ruched, v-neck blouse, fringey shawl, and bright flats.

I find this style to be incredibly versatile, because the line of the leg looks less like leggings and more like cigarette pants. There’s something vintage-inspired about them.

No-BS High Rise Pants During Midterms

I decided to style the high rise pants in a more casual way. They work perfectly under a long sweater, and would be great for warmth in winter months, since the ponte fabric is tightly woven.

Even though the leg is close-fitting, I find these very comfortable, even when sitting. I mention this because often, jeggings and performance leggings feel constricting at my knees.

American Giant fit-tested their No-BS collection on 65 women of varying sizes and went through 4 rounds of prototyping to get the fit just right. I wear a 12 in this style, too.

Other Features

Look at that pocket!

The No-BS pant comes in three versions: high rise, kick flare, and standard. They are currently available for purchase in classic black and Heritage (navy).

Each style is pull-on and has a small pocket at the waistline. And they’re machine washable! At under $100, these are a great price for a (more) sustainable and ethical pair of work pants.

If you’re not in the market for ponte pants, American Giant carries a full line of apparel for women and men.

I bought the kick-flare pants last year. It was a big $$ purchase for me because I usually buy secondhand. I do not regret it. They wash up amazingly well, hold their shape through multiple wears, and are incredibly opaque and flattering. I adore your "party" look and want to recreate it!

I also bought my husband the "greatest hoodie ever" as his holiday gift last year and it, too, was worth the price (which felt shockingly high for a hoodie). This thing is HEAVY. It's at least as warm as a fleece or a lightweight coat. I seriously imagine he'll have it for 20+ years.

That is so good to hear! It can be really hard to differentiate price point due to high quality vs. price point due to slick branding. Thanks for sharing how things hold up, too.

Ooh, I've had these bookmarked for awhile! Are they pretty matte and opaque?

Yes, I would say that they're completely matte and opaque. The stretch content might have some sheen in harsh light, but I haven't noticed it at all in natural light.
