Sustainable Black Friday Sales 2020

What does it mean for a sale season to be sustainable?
While it’s certainly true that major sales seasons that get people to impulse-buy and over-shop are, by definition, not sustainable, the reality is that ethical, sustainable, and fair trade goods often come at a higher price.
This means that a lot of people – myself included in many cases – simply can’t budget to purchase them at regular-price, especially when it means taking the risk of buying online only to find that an item doesn’t work out. I see this time as a way to engage with the brands I want to support in order to find those items that really work for me. Then, I will better understand what to save up for in the future.
I use this time of the year to:
- buy the items I’ve had on my wishlist but couldn’t previously afford
- find small gifts for my friends and family
- support my favorite ethical brands in their fourth quarter sales goals
While I’m sharing sales in this post, don’t forget to check details for Reclaim Black Friday, an initiative whereby white-owned brands redistribute a portion of proceeds to Indigenous and Black-run organizations. You can learn more on their website.
