Outfits for Texas Fall

Outfits for Transitional Weather

Texas fall is not normal fall.

It’s not crisp leaves falling on a cool day. It’s crispy leaves falling from drought. It’s not feeling the first shiver of cold air down your spine. It’s feeling sweat roll down your back because you thought 85 degrees was close enough to sweater weather.

We had record heat and an eternity of days with no rainfall this summer. It was a physical and psychological burden. One woman I know cried when we got a few drops in late August. Another’s teen daughter called her just to tell her it was raining at home.

The climate crisis is being felt nearly everywhere now. But here in Houston, we are on the frontlines. It is difficult to pretend everything is fine when the pipes are bursting, the electrical grid is overloaded, the trees are dropping their leaves, and people are dying.

It’s a daily reality. But we do the work we can. And we press on.

Gasp! I took outfit photos

All of that was a weird segue into my first actual OOTD-style outfit post since, um, 2022?

Since I wear a clerical collar for work, my outfits have become a bit niche. At first, I had no idea how to dress in a way that felt like me while also representing myself as a priest.

But, now that I’m coming up on my ordination anniversary, I am much more comfortable in my own skin.

I could easily adapt these outfits to the collar and no one would bat an eye.

Still, uniform dressing has been very good for editing my wardrobe.

I know what balance I want to strike between playfulness and professionalism and I don’t like too much fuss. I have been able to stick to the brands, colors, and silhouettes I know I’ll actually wear. And I let practicality win.

In case it’s not obvious, I am fully here for the resurgence of 90s and Y2K fashion.

I was very fashion-conscious during those years and savor the chance to re-wear favorites – like platform sandals – and style things my mom wouldn’t let me buy at the time – like a Coach bag.

Mott & Bow Fall Favorites

I am a Mott & Bow partner, so I’m styling some of their fall items in these outfits.

The cotton tees are luxuriously soft with just the right amount of drape. I like that they offer a cream t-shirt and not just white, because it suits my coloring better. The cream is a bit see-through, but looks fine with a nude bra, just FYI.

The cashmere sweater is more substantial than a lot of cashmere on the market and the v-neck is a nice departure from my usual crewneck sweaters.

  1. Love the outfits! Sorry to hear that Texas fall isn’t so much fall-like. Climate crisis, big sigh (sad emoji). On a different note, I feel that a bit here in San Francisco…the climate here is unique in that the warmest weather happens in Sept, Oct, and now into Nov. But like June and July are cloudy/foggy and very cool, only in the 60’s. I’m like, why am I wearing my puffy jacket still in July?
